Okay...like...wow. Where do I even begin? I'm not going to say Twilight 'cos everyone else will say Twilight, because it's truly that bad and completely over-rated but not over-rated for being good but over-rated for being absolutely terribly horrible and putrid... and I'm hipster so I don't roll that way #sorrynotsorry
I was completely torn between either the Hunger Games, or Divergent. See, the reason why I 'nominate' these two because they are actually both...good, in their own ways. They both teach something that everyone can relate to, and they have really great moments that made me freak out, and they also had absolutely cringe worthy moments that made me question everything...but I choose these two because they are over-rated while still being somewhat good. Twilight is just awful, and that's why it's over-rated. Hunger Games and Divergent are over-rated because all teenagers love it, while not really understanding the deeper meaning behind it...SO LET'S DO THIS.
While I really do want to say Hunger Games...I finally decided on Divergent. Don't get me wrong, I really do like Divergent. I went and saw the movie with my two best friends in the world, Sav and Mara, and half the time we were quoting things from the factions we are from, quotes, things that weren't in the movie from the books, etc. We were even going to dress up like our factions, but then we realised that that is actually much harder than expected 'cos 1. I don't own anything fully grey (for abnegation) and 2. Mara didn't want to choose something like Amity and hang out in the most colour-blind mix matched clothes and 3. We're divergent, we can't be controlled.
I have chosen Divergent to be over-rated because it's not CRAZILY good as a book. While it does teach an amazing principle of that the 'cliques' or 'groups' we put ourselves into don't define who we are, we can be everything - a smartie, a beauty, and whatever else clique or cliche there is in this world - We aren't based to be put into one fixed stereotype for everyone. The book relies heavily on the fact of sacrifice. The factions require you to sacrifice your previous life for this new life, they require you to sacrifice your parents and family for the new faction family, Tris makes COUNTLESS sacrifices throughout the entire series (coughsheisstillstupidcough) and basically everyone is willing to throw themselves in front of a bullet for their cause of sacrifice. It's all about sacrifice. While these are all good points, the reason it's so over-rated is because everyone, even the media, only publicise the romance and beauties that are Theo James and Shailene Woodley in the movie. They don't even care about the political statements made in the book, they don't even mention the factionless and the countless deaths that happen throughout the book because of this shameless government rule of 'factions'...no, they only mention the romance between Four and Tris (Spoilers...you should have expected this). And this is just my personal opinion, but the book series proceeds to get worse and worse as it closes in on the last book, Allegiant. There were so many times that I just wanted to throw the book and smack someone near to me because of how stupid the decisions were, or how poorly written some part was. While I loved the idea and how deep the plot could have been, Divergent is over-rated for me.
That doesn't mean though that I can't keep pinning tumblr posts on Divergent on Pinterest...
