The beginning of my book love began before I could even read. There is a video of me when I was about 18 months "reading" Go Dog, Go (Dr. Seuss). Basically I was just repeating the words GO DOG GO!!! Over and over again.
The first book that I fell in love with was Bridge to Terabithia, hence why it's my favourite. Although, it was damn near impossible to chose just one favourite book (it's like asking me to chose the favourite hair on my head). I've read it four times. The first time, I was seven and I immediately found myself relating to Jesse, the main character. He was a kind of social outcast; both at school and at home. He had a secret passion for art and was in love with his music teacher, Miss Edmunds. Then, a new neighbor moves in next door, a free-spirited girl with an amazing imagination named Leslie. I also related to her. Both her parents were authors who encouraged her to use her imagination. I fell in love with the way their friendship grew and blossomed. They explored the woods behind their houses and found Teribithia by swinging across a rope swing. And this is how Jesse started to come out of his shell. He loved Leslie for all her quirks and imperfections. I am not going to spoil the ending [if you don't already know what happens read the book (Yes. I am aware it's a movie but the book is better)] but it's heartbreaking and beautiful. My favourite scene is when Jesse empties all of his paint that Leslie gave him as a birthday present into the river out of frustration and pain. The metaphor about the colours swirling brightly before drifting past and disappearing is so strong and touching and sad. As an empath I actually enjoy reading sad books (maybe not necessarily enjoy, but I find peace in them) and this is what started it all. I will always love it and it's simplicity and it's celebration of imagination and friendship.
So here's post number one! Tomorrow I'm going to read a book my mum borrowed from the library called The Still Point of the Turning World. I'll keep you updated. Hope you enjoy my amazing writing skills :P
