The book starts out with Chick explaining that he had always been a Daddy's boy up until his Dad left and he didn't have a choice. And then we are able to piece together the events that led Chick to this point in his life. And it's this fact that makes his relationship with his mother so.... vulnerable and heartbreaking. At first, I didn't really like Chick. He came across as very selfish, but there was obviously other factors that contributed to his state, so by the end of the book I felt for him.
I also, really liked the way the book ended with a bit of a twist that changed my perspective on everything I'd just read. It was very smart and well done.
There were chapters of sorts titled respectively "Times My Mother Stood Up For Me" and "Times I Did Not Stand Up for My Mother" These were the parts that made me cry.
